I suppose I ought to be gratified that it prompted them to revise their AI instructions to students somewhat: they no longer cite me specifically as someone whose poetry may be used in order for generative AI to create poems. But they still have not understood that it is NONSENSE to generate work “in the style of ” anyone as a way to understand that writer’s work.
Let me spell it out for them: A LIBRARIAN SHOULD ONLY SUGGEST THAT STUDENTS READ ACTUAL AUTHORS ACTUAL WORK!!
Here is the revised paragraph in their instructions:
As an example to use for critical discussion
- If permitted by your instructor, you may include AI generated output for analysis or critique (e.g., a poem or image in the style of a specific artist, or a general essay on a topic). The AI output should be used only as material for critical discussion — such as examining style, accuracy, limitations, or differences from original works—and not presented as original creative work. You must clearly acknowledge the use of the AI tool, describe how it was used (including the prompt[s]), and properly cite the generated output (see the Citing AI page). For generated images, audio, or code, be sure to review the AI tool’s stated usage terms and copyright restrictions.
